Bursting in Coupled Cell Systems

چکیده
Periodic bursting in fast-slow systems can be viewed as closed paths through the unfolding parameters of degenerate singularities. Using this approach we show that bursting in coupled systems can have interesting behavior. We focus on two identical cell systems and use the Z2 symmetry present in such systems to illustrate interesting bursting phenomena. In particular, we show that Hopf/Hopf mode interactions can lead to bursting between in phase and out of phase periodic solutions and symmetry-breaking Takens-Bogdanov singularities can lead to bursting that randomly chooses between two (symmetrically related) limit cycles.

Chaotic bursting as chaotic itinerancy in coupled neural oscillators.
We show that chaotic bursting activity observed in coupled neural oscillators is a kind of chaotic itinerancy. In neuronal systems with phase deformation along the trajectory, diffusive coupling induces a dephasing effect. Because of this effect, an antiphase synchronized solution is stable for weak coupling, while an in-phase solution is stable for very strong coupling. For intermediate coupli...
متن کاملWhen Transitions Between Bursting Modes Induce Neural Synchrony
We study the synchronization of bursting cells that are coupled through both excitatory and inhibitory connections. We extend our recent results on networks of Hindmarsh–Rose bursting neurons [Belykh et al., 2014] to coupled Sherman β-cell models and show that the addition of repulsive inhibition to an excitatory network can induce synchronization. We discuss the mechanism of this purely synerg...

A singularly perturbed model is proposed for a system comprised of a PEM Fuel Cell(PEM-FC) with Natural Gas Hydrogen Reformer (NG-HR). This eighteenth order system is decomposedinto slow and fast lower order subsystems using singular perturbation techniques that provides tools forseparation and order reduction. Then, three different types of controllers, namely an optimal full-order,a near-opti...
متن کاملSynchronization in Neuronal Networks with Electrical and Chemical Coupling
Synchronized cortical activities in the central nervous systems of mammals are crucial for sensory perception, coordination, and locomotory function. The neuronal mechanisms that generate synchronous synaptic inputs in the neocortex are far from being fully understood. This thesis contributes toward an understanding of the emergence of synchronization in networks of bursting neurons as a highly...
متن کاملFrom spikers to bursters via coupling: help from heterogeneity.
It has been shown previously that identical spiking cells, incapable of bursting by themselves, may burst under weak diffusive coupling conditions. With stronger coupling, the coupled system reverts to bursting can be recovered by introducing heterogeneity in the model parameters. For a two-cell system, we explain the phenomenon with bifurcation analysis. For larger clusters of coupled cells, w...
